Xilinx, Inc. has announced the world’s first FPGA-based 80Gbps Network Interface Card (NIC). They also demonstrated an FPGA connecting to the new Intel® Xeon® E5-2600 v2 processor via the QPI (Intel QuickPath Interconnect) protocol.
80Gbps Network Interface Card
The Xilinx 80Gbps NIC leverages a single All Programmable device to achieve its impressive performance. This device implements several key components:
- Traffic Manager SmartCORE IP
- DMA controller
- PCIe ports
- Two 40G Ethernet ports
By integrating these functions into a single FPGA, Xilinx replaces two ASSPs (Application-Specific Standard Products), resulting in superior throughput, lower power consumption, and other advantages.
Intel QPI Interface
The Intel QPI Interface solution provides developers with a high-performance, low-latency FPGA-based interface for Intel processors.
The demonstration featured a Xilinx® 7 series FPGA communicating with the Intel Xeon E5 2600 V2 processor through the QPI interface (version 1.1). This highlights the potential for FPGAs to enhance and accelerate processing tasks alongside powerful CPUs.
