As we know, microwave frequencies can’t be directly transmitted over cable. To overcome this limitation, these high-frequency signals are downconverted to lower frequencies using mixers. Some of these channels are mapped to standard 6MHz TV channel frequencies. Note that cable TV channel frequencies are considered non-broadcast channels.

Heterodyne processors are used to translate received signals to the desired channels. A processor includes a tuner to pick up over-the-air signals and produce channels with Intermediate Frequencies (IFs) of about 45.75 and 41.25 MHz. These picture and sound IFs are separated by filters and then passed through AGC (Automatic Gain Control) circuits to provide gain.
