This page describes the Magic Tee S-Matrix (Scattering Matrix) or E-H Plane Tee S-Matrix (Scattering Matrix).

It also covers the basics of the Magic Tee (i.e., E-H Plane Tee).

What is a Magic Tee or E-H Plane Tee?

As shown in the following image, a magic tee is a 3-dB hybrid coupler. It’s a combination of an E-plane Tee and an H-plane Tee. It has four arms: arm-1, arm-2, arm-3, and arm-4.

Arm-1 and Arm-2 are referred to as collinear arms or side arms. Arm-3 is called the “difference port,” and arm-4 is called the “sum port.”

Magic Tee

The magic tee structure uses an impedance matching structure internally to function as desired. It uses a post inside the H-plane tee and an inductive iris inside the E-plane tee.

Magic tees are used in a wide variety of microwave devices, such as bridges, duplexers, power combiners/splitters, mixers, circulators, etc.
