This article delves into the fundamentals of IoT Gateways, including their functions, and highlights the features of the Intel IoT Gateway.
IoT stands for the Internet of Things.
Definition: A typical networking gateway acts as a protocol translator. It bridges the gap between different systems by converting the protocol of one to be compatible with the protocol of another. This allows heterogeneous systems to seamlessly interoperate. For example, a gateway connecting GSM and CDMA networks must understand and translate between the protocols of both systems.
IoT Gateway: Connecting Things to the IoT Cloud
An IoT Gateway simplifies the connection of non-compliant IoT devices to the broader IoT network. Think of it as a universal adapter for your “things.” This is illustrated in Figure 1.

Functions of an IoT Gateway
Here’s what an IoT Gateway does:
- Connects “things” to the cloud: This includes home appliances, clocks, cars, robots, and more.
- Enables quick data conversion for the cloud: It facilitates the efficient conversion of data, making it cloud-ready for easy download and analysis.
- Publishes data to cloud services: Allows data to be sent to services like text messages or email.
- Eliminates the need for NoSQL data stores (like MongoDB): Simplifies the data storage process in some applications.
- Supports analytics data applications: For instance, it can be used with SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) data.
- Enables social media integration: Data can be used with platforms like Twitter.
