What is a Multi Radio IoT Platform?

An IoT platform that houses multiple radio transceiver ICs of different standards, such as Wi-Fi, cellular, Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Thread, is known as a multi-radio IoT platform.

Let’s understand this with an example: a Zigbee-Wi-Fi IoT gateway. In this device, a mobile application can be used to control Zigbee end devices. The mobile app can connect with the IoT gateway via the cloud (WAN) or WLAN (Wi-Fi). The gateway functions as a routing device between the Zigbee end devices and the cloud.

Multiprotocol IoT Gateway

Devices can be controlled locally using Android or iOS mobile applications with Wi-Fi when internet connectivity is not available. The figure above depicts the block diagram of a typical multi-radio IoT platform. As shown, such a modular platform can be used as a Wi-Fi to Zigbee gateway as well as for cellular to Zigbee applications. One can program and incorporate other wireless standards (e.g., Z-Wave, Thread, etc.) for use on such an IoT gateway.

Unlicensed LPWA (Low Power Wide Area) networks employ other wireless technologies/standards such as LoRa, Sigfox, and Ingenu. Licensed LPWA radio technologies used in IoT are LTE-M and NB-IoT. Short-range radio IoT platforms use common technologies such as Bluetooth and RFID.
