This page lists Orthomode Transducer (OMT) manufacturers and vendors. The list includes details of popular OMT manufacturers for various frequency bands, presented in a table format.

Introduction to Orthomode Transducers

An Orthomode transducer is a 3-port device that converts a circularly polarized signal into horizontally/vertically polarized signals, and vice versa. It’s typically connected to a horn feed at one port for transmission and reception of electromagnetic waves using an RF antenna. The other two ports are connected to rectangular waveguides for coupling with the transmitter and receiver parts of the system.

The figure below shows a C band OMT used in a VSAT terminal within a satellite system. It can be used for 4 GHz Rx bands and 6 GHz Tx bands. The C band covers the frequency range from 3.7 GHz to 4.2 GHz during reception and from 5.925 GHz to 6.425 GHz during transmission of EM radio signals.

OMT - Orthomode Transducer

This RF device has been developed for various frequency bands including C band, Ku band, K band, Ka band, and X band based on different applications. There are also Orthomode transducers designed for multiple bands, such as C/Ku band OMTs, which are used for both C band and Ku band terminals.

Functions of an Orthomode Transducer

  • Separation of signals of different polarities.
  • Provides necessary isolation for circular polarization.
  • Enables frequency re-use at different polarizations, increasing satellite capacity.

Specifications to Consider When Selecting an OMT

  • Frequency band of use (Tx/Rx)
  • Waveguide interface at the three ports: circular WG and Rectangular WG (WR-229/WR-137 etc.)
  • Return loss at the three ports
  • Insertion loss from Tx port to Antenna port and Rx port to Antenna port
  • Isolation between ports (e.g., between Tx-Rx ports of the same polarization)
  • Weight and Size
