Introduction to USB

USB Conformance Tests

The USB interface supports different data transfer speeds, namely Low speed, Full speed, and High speed. USB-IF electrical test specifications define specific tests based on these speeds.

Transmitter Tests

These tests require a high-speed oscilloscope with sufficient bandwidth. Typical transmitter tests include:

  • Data rate test
  • Eye Diagrams and Spectrum mask tests
  • Rise and Fall time
  • Monotonic data transitions over vertical openings
  • Output voltage when either D+ or D- is driven high
  • Output voltage when either D+ or D- is not being driven
  • Differential output impedance

Receiver Tests

Receiver tests utilize a compatible generator capable of producing specific test signals with defined amplitudes into the USB Device Under Test (DUT). These tests include:

  • Data rate test
  • Compliance as per different masks
  • Reliably receive data in the presence of common mode (CM) voltage
  • Implementation of transmission envelope detector (ED) with desired receiver tests
