This page provides an overview of USB test solution providers and the equipment/software they offer for USB conformance testing.
Introduction to USB
The Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface, similar in concept to RS232, facilitates peer-to-peer communication between a host and a peripheral device. Several USB versions exist, including USB 2.0, USB 3.0, USB 3.1 Gen1/Gen2, USB 3.2, and USB 4.0.
The following table summarizes key features of various USB versions:
USB versions | Features |
---|---|
USB 2.0 | Data Rate: 480 Mbps, Power Output: 2.5W |
USB 3.0 | Data Rate: 4800 Mbps (4.8 Gbps), Power Output: 4.5W (Gen1) |
USB 3.1 Gen1 | Data Rate: 5 Gbps, Power Output: 4.5W (Gen1) |
USB 3.1 Gen2 | Data Rate: 10 Gbps, Power Output: 100W (Gen2) |
USB 3.2 | Data Rate: 5/10/20 Gbps, Power Output: Up to 100W |
USB 4.0 | Data Rate: 40 Gbps (Max.), Power Output: Up to 100 Watts |
USB Conformance Tests
The USB interface supports different data transfer speeds, namely Low speed, Full speed, and High speed. USB-IF electrical test specifications define specific tests based on these speeds.
The following sections detail the USB transmitter and receiver tests. The diagram below illustrates a typical USB test setup:
Transmitter Tests
These tests require a high-speed oscilloscope with sufficient bandwidth. Typical transmitter tests include:
- Data rate test
- Eye Diagrams and Spectrum mask tests
- Rise and Fall time
- Monotonic data transitions over vertical openings
- Output voltage when either D+ or D- is driven high
- Output voltage when either D+ or D- is not being driven
- Differential output impedance
Receiver Tests
Receiver tests utilize a compatible generator capable of producing specific test signals with defined amplitudes into the USB Device Under Test (DUT). These tests include:
- Data rate test
- Compliance as per different masks
- Reliably receive data in the presence of common mode (CM) voltage
- Implementation of transmission envelope detector (ED) with desired receiver tests
