As shown, the VCO converts a differential voltage into a change in the frequency of the oscillator output. This output frequency is then fed back to the input phase comparator module. Hence, the VCO corrects frequency drift due to temperature variations and aging, keeping the synthesizer output stable and locked to the reference frequency source. This reference frequency source is usually provided by an OCXO (Oven Controlled Crystal Oscillator).

The loop filter generates a voltage based on the phase difference between the reference frequency output and the VCO output. A simple loop filter can be an RC low-pass filter circuit, and a simple phase comparator circuit can be an EX-OR gate.
