What is an LVDT Transducer?

Introduction:

The LVDT (Linear Variable Differential Transformer) is an electrical transformer used to measure linear displacement or position. A similar device, the RVDT, measures rotary displacement. LVDT transducers are known for being robust and frictionless, offering lower hysteresis and better repeatability.

The LVDT operates through electromagnetic coupling, eliminating the need for physical electrical contact between the moving part and the coil assembly.

Position and displacement can be sensed using electromagnetic induction. The movement of an object alters the magnetic flux coupling between two coils, which is then converted into a voltage.

LVDT transducers typically have a measurement range of +/-100 µm to +/-25 cm, with input voltages ranging from 1 V to 24 V rms.

LVDT Transducer Selection Guide

Consider the following specifications when selecting an LVDT transducer for your specific application:

  • Linear range in mm: The range of displacement the LVDT can accurately measure.
  • Size/Dimension of the LVDT transducer: The physical dimensions of the transducer.
  • Operating temperature: The temperature range within which the LVDT will function correctly.
  • Other Features: Consider desirable characteristics such as:
    • Adjustable
    • Spring-loaded
    • High reliability
    • General purpose
    • Economical
