As shown in the figure, traditional storage refers to the methods we’ve historically used, and often still use, to store data as part of disaster management and everyday operations.

In traditional storage, data is typically stored on computers or servers connected to your network (LAN/WAN). The data is stored on disks that can be reformatted or reprovisioned as needed. To increase storage capacity, you simply add more disks. When storage needs outgrow the initial capacity, secondary backup devices and even third-party websites might be used to store the excess data. Furthermore, data is often stored in multiple office locations to guard against complete data loss in case of a disaster or equipment malfunction.

Cloud Storage

Cloud storage, on the other hand, utilizes a separate, remote location where all serving and backup data servers, as well as databases, are maintained. Users can access this location via the internet.

Key Differences Between Traditional and Cloud Storage

Here’s a breakdown of the major differences:

  • Data Access Time: Data access in traditional storage is generally faster compared to cloud storage, due to proximity and network latency.
  • File Sharing: Cloud storage allows for easy file sharing with others from anywhere with an internet connection, which is often more cumbersome in traditional storage setups.
  • Data Retrieval in Failure Scenarios: In a cloud model, retrieving data can be impossible if the entire system fails, including backups. While rare, this is a risk to consider.
  • Security: Traditional systems are often perceived as more secure because data is stored on-premises and under direct control, unlike cloud storage where data resides on third-party servers.

Ideally, a blend of both traditional and cloud storage concepts can create the most efficient and robust storage system.

Advantages of Cloud Storage

  • Usability: Most cloud services provide user-friendly interfaces with folders, allowing for easy drag-and-drop file management between local and cloud storage.
  • Bandwidth Efficiency: Instead of sending email attachments to multiple recipients, you can simply share a web link to the file(s) stored in the cloud, saving significant bandwidth.
  • Accessibility: Files stored on cloud servers can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection.
  • Disaster Recovery: Cloud storage acts as a reliable second copy of important files stored at a remote location, accessible via the internet in case of emergencies or disasters.
  • Cost Savings: Cloud storage allows users to dynamically adjust storage capacity based on demand, leading to cost savings. Furthermore, there are indirect savings on electricity bills since remote storage eliminates the need for local power consumption.

Disadvantages of Cloud Storage

  • Usability Caveats: Avoid using drag-and-drop to move files to the cloud, as this will remove the original copy. Use copy-and-paste instead to retain a local copy.
  • Bandwidth Costs: Cloud service providers may charge extra for exceeding bandwidth allowances, so carefully compare pricing plans.
  • Accessibility Limitations: Without an internet connection, access to cloud data is impossible.
  • Data Security Concerns: Storing data on remote servers raises data security concerns, as sensitive information resides on third-party infrastructure, potentially alongside data from other organizations.
  • Software Requirements: Manipulating files locally across multiple devices may require downloading specific applications on each device.
