What are Brain Waves?
Brain waves arise from communication between neurons through electrical pulses, reflecting our emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. These waves are detected using sensors placed on or within the scalp. Normal brain function involves continuous electrical activity, recordable via an Electroencephalogram (EEG).
These recorded patterns of neuronal electrical activity are called brain waves, continuous series of peaks and troughs, measured in Hertz (Hz). Each individual’s brain waves are unique, changing with age, sensory input, brain health, and the body’s chemical state. The range of brain wave frequencies corresponds to various states of mind, from deep sleep to high alertness.
Types of Brain Waves
Brain waves are classified based on their frequencies and amplitude. The main types include infra-low, delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma waves.
Infra-low brain waves have frequencies below 0.5 Hz. Due to their slow nature, they are difficult to detect, and less research has been conducted on them.

Delta Wave
- Frequency range: 0.5 Hz to 4 Hz

- Significance: Deep sleep. During this state, healing and regeneration are stimulated.
Theta Wave
- Frequency range: 4 Hz to 8 Hz
- Characteristics: As shown in the figure above.
- Significance: Drowsiness, the first stage of sleep. This type acts as a gateway to learning, memory, and intuition.
Alpha Wave
- Frequency range: 8 Hz to 14 Hz
- Characteristics: As shown in the figure above.
- Significance: Overall coordination, calmness, mental alertness, mind-body integration, and learning.
Beta Wave
- Frequency range: 14 Hz to 30 Hz
- Characteristics: As shown in the figure above.
- Significance: Highly alert and focused state.
Gamma Wave
- Frequency range: 38 Hz to 42 Hz
- Characteristics: As shown in the figure above.
- Significance: Fastest brain activity, responsible for cognitive functioning, learning, memory, and information processing. These rhythms are considered responsible for modulated perception, consciousness, and spiritual emergence.
