Understanding DECT Phones: Basics and Applications

This page covers the fundamentals of DECT phones, including an application note and a list of DECT phone manufacturers. A DECT phone is simply a phone that operates according to the DECT (Digital European Cordless Telephone) standard specifications.
The standard defines the air interface between the base unit and the mobile phone unit.
Here are the key characteristics of a DECT phone:
- Frequency: Operates in the 1880 to 1900 MHz band.
- Channels: Supports 120 full-duplex channels.
- Modulation: Employs GMSK (Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying) modulation.
- Power Output: Typically 10mW on average.
- Range: Approximately 50 meters indoors and 300 meters in open space.
For a more in-depth understanding, refer to a DECT tutorial which delves into the DECT frame structure, protocol stack, and more.
DECT Phone Application
As illustrated in the figure, a DECT system consists of two primary components: a DECT base unit and a DECT phone handset. The DECT phone communicates with the base unit using DECT air interface protocols, adhering to the DECT protocol stack.
Typically, the DECT phone unit is placed on a charging stand, which provides continuous power. The DECT base unit is connected to a fixed telephone network, such as PSTN or ISDN. This allows DECT-compliant wireless phones to communicate with devices on the fixed telephone network.
