In the rapidly evolving landscape of connected technologies, IoT and Zigbee gateways play a crucial role in bridging diverse communication protocols and enabling seamless connectivity. As the demand for integrated smart solutions grows, various vendors and manufacturers have emerged, offering advanced products that support not just IoT and Zigbee, but also Thread, Wi-Fi, and Z-Wave networks. The multiprotocol gateway products provide effective solutions for comprehensive network integration.

We will explore top IoT gateway vendors and Zigbee gateway manufacturers including solutions from companies such as Volansys, D-Link, Mindtree, SWYCS, PHYTEC etc.

What is IoT Gateway?

As we know, a gateway in the networking domain refers to a device which converts the protocol of one system to be compliant with the protocol of another system. This allows them to communicate without any interoperability issues.

For example, a WiFi Zigbee Gateway makes it possible for Zigbee devices to communicate with WiFi devices and vice versa.

In summary, an IoT gateway enables two or more heterogeneous systems to communicate.

As shown in the figure, it connects things with the IoT cloud for analysis or processing.

Multiprotocol IoT Gateway

Multiprotocol refers to multiple wireless chips or protocols such as WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Z-Wave, NFC, and Thread on a single board. They are basically targeted based on short-range and long-range IoT requirements. Short-range IoT gateways take care of smart home requirements, whereas long-range gateways handle smart city requirements.

Wireless technologies such as WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Thread are designed for short-range wireless home requirements. Wireless technologies such as LoRaWAN, Sigfox, and other cellular standards such as 3G/LTE are designed for long-range wireless city or country-wide requirements.

Protocols such as MQTT and CoAP are used between the IoT gateway and cloud servers for data exchange. The IoT gateway can be configured and managed using applications developed for Android and iOS phones.

The figure depicts a block diagram of an IoT gateway. As shown, a Multiprotocol IoT Gateway consists of an MCU (Microcontroller Unit), WiFi or cellular IC, and a short-range RF SoC housing multiple protocols such as Bluetooth, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread, NFC, etc. Some IoT gateways also house wired connectivity protocols such as USB, Ethernet, RS232, RS485, and so on. The gateway uses a power management IC (PMIC) to distribute and manage power.
