Zigbee USB Dongle Basics

This page describes Zigbee USB basics and provides a list of Zigbee-based USB vendors.

Similar to a normal USB dongle used for data or information storage, a Zigbee USB provides the same function. In addition, it interfaces with other nearby Zigbee devices, allowing them to send information wirelessly through a Zigbee connection. The USB device, connected to a PC, then stores this information.

A Zigbee USB dongle operates at the 2.4 GHz ISM band. It is based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard and employs an RF transceiver chip that uses DSSS modulation.

The dongle can function as a network coordinator, a network router, or a sensor, depending on the requirement. It can directly join an existing Zigbee mesh network or form a new one.
