Z-Wave is a proprietary wireless communication protocol designed specifically for home automation, similar in purpose to Zigbee. It leverages low-power wireless technology to enable control of home-based electronic products, including remote controls and smoke alarms.

It is well-suited for low-overhead commands related to lighting, entertainment systems, and general household management. Developed by Zensys (now owned by Sigma Designs), the Z-Wave standard is available to Zensys consumers under a non-disclosure agreement.

Z-Wave operates in the 900 MHz band, outside the crowded 2.4 GHz frequency range, making it less susceptible to interference. This lower frequency also provides stronger signal penetration, allowing it to transmit through walls, floors, and ceilings with greater power compared to 2.4 GHz signals, enabling longer distances.
