What is a Horn Antenna?

Introduction:

The horn antenna was developed as an extension of a waveguide, designed to transmit electromagnetic (EM) waves from waveguide-based systems into free space.

To achieve efficient transmission, one end of the horn antenna is tapered. This tapering allows microwave power from the source to couple effectively into free space, minimizing impedance mismatch. Consequently, EM waves are propagated into the surrounding air.

  • Spherical Wavefront: Horn antennas radiate energy in a spherical wavefront shape, which means they don’t produce a sharply focused or highly directive beam.
  • Gain Limitations: The gain of a horn antenna is typically limited to around 20 dB. This limitation arises because increasing the gain requires a larger horn opening. However, a larger opening often results in an excessively long horn, making it impractical.
