Planar Resistance Equation

Planar resistors are created using a thin resistive film deposited on a semi-insulating substrate. Common resistive materials include Aluminum (Al), Gold (Au), Tantalum (Ta), and Copper (Cu). These materials typically exhibit resistivity in the range of 30 to 1000 ohms per square.

The following equation or formula is used for the Planar resistance calculator:

planar resistance equation

At higher frequencies, parasitic capacitance and distributed inductance can cause the planar resistor’s resistance to become frequency-dependent. To minimize thermal resistance, the film area should be kept large. As highlighted in the equation, the planar resistance value is determined by the length (l), sheet resistivity of the film, line width, and film thickness.
