5G NR FR2 Band Orthomode Transducer (OMT) Manufacturers
This page discusses Orthomode Transducers (OMT) used in 5G NR networks, specifically for the FR2 band. It also lists vendors and manufacturers of 5G FR2 Band OMTs.
Introduction to 5G NR
5G NR (New Radio) is a radio access technology (RAT) similar to 4G LTE. It’s specified in the 3GPP 38 series. 3GPP published its initial Release 15 specifications in 2018 (Phase-1), followed by Release 16 (Phase-2). Release 17 is planned for 2021.
There are two deployment modes in 5G NR:
- NSA (Non-Standalone) Mode: The 5G mobile subscriber uses both 4G LTE and 5G NR networks. Control messages are handled by 4G LTE, while data flow is handled by the 5G NR network.
- SA (Standalone) Mode: The 5G user relies solely on the 5G NR network for both control and data flow.
5G NR FR1 and FR2 Bands
5G New Radio (NR) operates in two frequency ranges: FR1 (Frequency Range 1) and FR2 (Frequency Range 2). FR1 includes sub-6 GHz frequency bands, whereas FR2 includes bands from 24.25 to 52.6 GHz, including the mmWave range (up to 100 GHz).
The following table outlines the 5G NR FR2 bands:
FR2 Band Designation | Uplink/Downlink Range | Channel Bandwidth | Duplexing |
---|---|---|---|
n257 | 26.5 to 29.5 GHz | 50, 100, 200, 400 MHz | TDD |
n258 | 24.25 to 27.5 GHz | 50, 100, 200, 400 MHz | TDD |
n259 | 39.5 to 43.5 GHz | 50, 100, 200, 400 MHz | TDD |
n260 | 37 to 40 GHz | 50, 100, 200, 400 MHz | TDD |
n261 | 27.5 to 28.35 GHz | 50, 100, 200, 400 MHz | TDD |
What is an OMT (Orthomode Transducer)?
An OMT is a device that couples two linearly polarized orthogonal signals simultaneously, providing polarization isolation between transmit and receive directions.
The figure above illustrates an OMT used in VSAT applications to share the same antenna for both transmission and reception. OMTs are used in various applications, including radiometers, diplexers, and dual-polarized antennas.
Consider these specifications when selecting an OMT for a 5G NR system:
- Operating Frequency range
- Waveguide interface
- Return loss at ports
- Insertion loss (Tx or Rx to antenna port)
- Isolation between ports
- Cross-polarization rejection
