This document outlines the basic features of a 5G Home Router (CPE), specifically focusing on the Samsung 5G CPE model used by Verizon Wireless.
Understanding 5G
- 5G represents the fifth generation of wireless technology, developed according to 3GPP Release 15 and beyond.
- It surpasses previous 4G standards like LTE, LTE-Advanced, and LTE-Advanced Pro.
- A 5G system comprises several key elements:
- 5G Home Router (or CPE)
- 5G Base Station
- 5G Core Network
- 5G compliant mobile phones
- 5G devices operate in two primary modes: NSA (Non-Standalone) and SA (Standalone).
- Initially, 5G devices operate in NSA mode, relying on LTE for control/management and 5G for data transmission/reception.
- Eventually, 5G devices will transition to SA mode, utilizing the 5G NR network for both control and data operations.
- 5G operates across various frequency bands: sub-1 GHz, 1-6 GHz, and above 6 GHz (millimeter wave frequencies). It offers significantly improved speeds compared to existing 4G LTE networks. The low latency and high data rates of 5G provide internet connectivity comparable to broadband cable services.
